The Letters of Thomas Gray Including the Correspondence of Gray and Mason V3

This volume is part of the definitive late 19th-century scholarly edition of the correspondence of the English poet Thomas Gray, edited by Duncan C. Tovey. Published originally in the 1890s and 1900s, Tovey's work was designed to provide a comprehensive and meticulously annotated collection of Gray’s letters, which are prized for their wit, erudition, and insight into the 18th-century literary landscape. The inclusion of the correspondence between Gray and his close friend William Mason offers a unique window into the personal lives and intellectual circles of the era's most prominent figures.

Duncan C. Tovey’s editorial approach was characterized by rigorous historical context, aiming to correct inaccuracies in earlier editions and provide the reader with a clearer understanding of the poet’s character. Upon its release, the set was praised by scholars for its thoroughness and accessibility, becoming a standard reference for students of English literature. The current iteration is a modern reprint of this historical project, serving to preserve Tovey's significant academic contributions for contemporary researchers and collectors of classical literary history.
