The Letters of Thomas Gray Including the Correspondence of Gray and Mason V3

This volume is part of a scholarly editorial project aimed at compiling the extensive correspondence of Thomas Gray, the eighteenth-century English poet best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. The series was designed to provide a comprehensive look at Gray's intellectual life and his intimate, lifelong friendship with the poet William Mason, who served as Gray's primary editor and literary executor after his death.

The publication history of these letters is rooted in the nineteenth-century effort to cement Gray’s legacy as a central figure of the pre-Romantic era. By archiving his exchanges, editors sought to reveal the private personality behind the poet's public output. This specific edition is a modern scholarly reprint intended to make these historically significant documents accessible to students and researchers of literary history, maintaining the rigorous annotation style established by early critics.
