The Life of Samuel Johnson LL. D.

Published in 1791, The Life of Samuel Johnson LL.D. by James Boswell is widely regarded as one of the most important biographies in the English language. Boswell, a Scottish lawyer and diarist, spent years meticulously recording conversations, observations, and letters from his close friend, the eminent literary figure Samuel Johnson. The work was born out of Boswell's desire to preserve the essence of a man he considered the greatest genius of his age, utilizing a narrative style that prioritized intimate detail and honest characterization over the formal, distant biographical conventions of the eighteenth century.

The book's unique structure—often cited as the precursor to modern journalistic biography—was met with immediate critical acclaim for its vivid portrayal of Johnson’s intellectual rigor and personal idiosyncrasies. While contemporary critics occasionally debated the propriety of Boswell's candid revelations, the work was quickly recognized as a foundational text for the study of 18th-century English literature. This specific ISBN represents a modern reprint edition, designed to provide contemporary readers with access to Boswell’s seminal account of the Johnsonian circle.
