Selections from James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson

James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson, first published in 1791, is widely regarded as the greatest biography in the English language. This specific volume represents a condensed selection of the original work, designed to distill Boswell’s unparalleled documentation of Johnson’s wit, philosophical musings, and social circles into a more accessible format for the nineteenth and twentieth-century reader.

The editorial tradition behind these selections emphasizes Boswell’s unique methodology, which shifted biographical standards by incorporating candid conversations and minute observations rather than mere formal chronologies. These abridged editions were historically favored by publishers seeking to maintain the cultural relevance of the Johnsonian circle, ensuring that the essence of their celebrated literary dialogues remained available to scholars and casual students alike.
