The Liminal Zone

The Liminal Zone is a collection of short horror manga stories by the acclaimed mangaka Junji Ito, published as a standalone volume in 2022. The series emerged from Ito’s desire to explore eerie, unsettling scenarios that occupy the spaces between the mundane and the supernatural, drawing on his signature style of body horror and psychological dread. The anthology continues his long-standing focus on the grotesque and the inexplicable, presenting tales that feel both contained and disturbingly open-ended.

In designing these narratives, Ito sought to evoke a sense of unease through intricate, high-contrast line work and pacing that allows tension to build slowly before a sudden, visceral climax. The volume was received with interest by fans of Ito’s previous works, such as Uzumaki and Tomie, and was noted by critics for its mastery of visual atmosphere. It occupies a distinct place in his bibliography as a collection of mature, standalone explorations of the uncanny that echo the unsettling themes prevalent throughout his extensive career.
