Where it came from
The Life of Genius Professor Yanagizawa, known in Japanese as Tensai Yanagizawa Kyōju no Seikatsu, began its serialization in 1988 within the pages of Morning, a seinen manga magazine published by Kodansha. Authored and illustrated by Yamashita Kazumi, the series documents the daily existence of a tenured university professor whose hyper-rational, eccentric approach to life highlights the contrast between scientific objectivity and the unpredictable nature of human emotion.
Yamashita’s design for the series prioritizes understated, observational humor over the dramatic flair common to the medium, reflecting her background in creating character-driven narratives. By focusing on the professor's idiosyncratic reactions to mundane occurrences, the work garnered significant critical acclaim within Japan for its intellectual wit and psychological depth, eventually earning the 2003 Kodansha Manga Award in the general category.
