The Lives of Eccentrics, or Henjin Henkutsu Retsuden, was originally serialized in the late 1980s and 90s in various Shueisha publications. Authored and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, the work represents a significant departure from his globally renowned Jojo's Bizarre Adventure series. Araki turned his focus toward historical figures—ranging from inventors and outlaws to obscure historical oddities—exploring the idiosyncrasies that defined their lives. The project grew out of his personal fascination with historical footnotes and his desire to apply his signature dramatic artistic style to real-world biography.

Designed with a focus on historical dramatization, the series showcases Araki’s evolution as a storyteller. The illustrations bridge his early 80s pulp-influence aesthetic with the sharper, more stylized linework that would later characterize his mature career.
