Where it came from
The LKY Story is a biographical manga series published by Shogakukan Asia, designed to chronicle the life and political career of Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of modern Singapore. The series was developed to bridge the gap between historical documentation and accessible storytelling, utilizing the visual language of manga to engage younger readers and a broader international audience with the complexities of Singapore's rapid national development.
The illustrative style follows standard shonen-inflected manga conventions, prioritizing clear narrative pacing and emotive character design to humanize the often stoic political figure. By distilling decades of governance, diplomatic challenges, and personal history into a graphic format, the project sought to preserve the legacy of a singular leader in a medium that resonates with contemporary cultural consumption. It was received as a novel approach to national biography, balancing educational intent with the stylistic tropes of Japanese graphic literature.
