Where it came from
The Low, Low Woods was published in 2020 as part of the inaugural slate for Hill House Comics, a curated horror imprint spearheaded by author Joe Hill for DC Comics. The series emerged from a desire to blend traditional comic book storytelling with the atmospheric, dread-filled sensibilities of contemporary literary horror. Set in the fictional Pennsylvania mining town of Shudder-to-Think, the narrative follows two teenage girls navigating a landscape defined by strange geological anomalies and the collective trauma of their community.
The series was written by award-winning author Carmen Maria Machado, whose background in short fiction and memoir profoundly influenced the project's psychological depth. The art, provided by Dani, leans into a stark, ink-heavy aesthetic that emphasizes the claustrophobia of the setting. Upon release, the volume was lauded by critics for its unique synthesis of body horror and social commentary, effectively establishing the Hill House label as a serious venue for experimental genre fiction within the DC catalog.
