The Macdermots of Ballycloran was published in 1847 as Anthony Trollope's first novel. Written while Trollope was working as a postal surveyor in Ireland, the story centers on the tragic downfall of a Catholic gentry family in County Leitrim. The narrative was heavily influenced by the social and political volatility of the time, specifically the agrarian unrest and the grim realities of the Great Famine, which served as a somber backdrop to the author's early observations of Irish life.

Despite Trollope's later acclaim as one of the Victorian era's most prolific writers, this debut failed to find an audience upon its initial release.
