The Macdermots of Ballycloran

Published in 1847, The Macdermots of Ballycloran was Anthony Trollope's first novel, written while he was working as a postal surveyor in Ireland. The story reflects the social and political tensions of rural Ireland during the period leading up to the Great Famine, focusing on the decline of a Catholic gentry family. Trollope drew on his extensive travels throughout the country to construct a narrative grounded in the harsh economic realities and sectarian conflicts of the time.
