The Man in the Iron Mask By Alexandre Dumas "Annotated Version" (Historical & Romantic Novel)

The Man in the Iron Mask, originally published in 1847 as the final segment of the expansive novel The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, concludes the epic cycle featuring the legendary Three Musketeers. Alexandre Dumas wrote the work during a prolific period of historical serializations, aiming to provide a dramatic and melancholic close to the lives of D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. The narrative draws loosely from the real 17th-century mystery of a masked prisoner held by King Louis XIV, blending historical intrigue with Dumas's signature flair for romantic adventure and political maneuvering.

This specific annotated version offers readers supplemental context regarding the historical figures and cultural references embedded within the original French text. Annotations of this nature generally strive to bridge the gap for modern audiences, clarifying the complex landscape of 17th-century French court life and the shifting allegiances of the era. By embedding explanations within the narrative flow, editors seek to preserve the immersive experience of the original prose while providing the necessary background for understanding the political stakes that drive Dumas's plot.
