The Man in the Iron Mask By Alexandre Dumas "Annotated Classic Volume" (Historical & Romantic Novel)

The Man in the Iron Mask, originally published in 1847, serves as the final installment of Alexandre Dumas’s expansive The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. Dumas drew inspiration from the genuine mystery of a French state prisoner identified only as Eustache Dauger, whose identity remained obscured behind a velvet or iron mask during the reign of Louis XIV. By weaving historical intrigue with his signature romantic flair, Dumas solidified the legend as a cornerstone of swashbuckling literature.

This specific Annotated Classic edition is designed to bridge the gap between historical fiction and contemporary scholarship. These volumes typically feature scholarly introductions, period-appropriate illustrations, and footnotes that contextualize the political climate of the 17th-century French court. While the prose retains Dumas’s original narrative pace, the added annotations were created to assist modern readers in navigating the dense web of historical references and aristocratic rivalries that define the source material.
