The Messenger of Mathematics

The Messenger of Mathematics was a long-running scholarly journal first established in 1871 as a successor to the Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin Messenger of Mathematics. Published primarily out of Cambridge, it was founded with the aim of providing a platform for the exchange of mathematical problems and analytical solutions among students and academics. Its creation occurred during a period of significant growth in British mathematical research, serving as a medium for those who preferred a more accessible forum than the highly formal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

The journal’s design and editorial focus were heavily influenced by the Cambridge mathematical tripos tradition, emphasizing elegance, rigor, and the creative application of geometry and analysis. It was edited for many years by figures such as J.W.L. Glaisher, whose influence ensured that the publication maintained a reputation for quality contributions that often sat between pure recreational interest and serious academic inquiry. Though it eventually ceased publication in 1929, it remains a notable historical record of the instructional and research priorities that defined late 19th and early 20th-century British mathematics.
