The Miscellaneous Works of the REV. Matthew Henry: Containing in Addition to Those Heretofore Published, Numerous Sermons Now First Printed from the Original Mss.: An Appendix on What Christ Is Made to Believers, in Forty Real Benefits, by Philip Henry

Matthew Henry was a prominent 17th and 18th-century Nonconformist minister best known for his exhaustive biblical commentary, which remained a staple of devotional reading for centuries. This specific compilation, published posthumously, was designed to preserve his miscellaneous writings and sermons that had not been included in his earlier, primary works. By gathering these manuscripts, editors sought to provide a comprehensive view of his theological perspective, particularly his focus on practical piety and the systematic application of scripture to daily life.

The publication process for such collections was common in the post-Enlightenment era, where the works of respected theologians were curated to maintain their influence among clergy and laypeople alike. The design and presentation were intended to convey scholarly authority and accessibility, reflecting the mid-Victorian preference for substantial, multi-volume sets. While the core of the text relies on Henry's original manuscripts, the addition of the appendix by his father, Philip Henry, served to anchor the volume in the legacy of Nonconformist tradition, ensuring its reception as a foundational resource for congregational study.
