The Novels of Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, utilized his novels as a platform to articulate his political philosophy, often referred to as 'One Nation' conservatism. Written throughout the mid-19th century, these works—including titles like Coningsby, Sybil, and Tancred—were designed to explore the social fissures of Victorian England, particularly the chasm between the working class and the wealthy elite. By blending romantic fiction with parliamentary debate, Disraeli aimed to influence the intellectual elite of his day and promote his vision of a unified national identity.

The publication history of these novels is characterized by several collected editions released in the decades following their original individual serializations. These sets were typically produced for the gentleman’s library, often featuring fine bindings and elegant typography consistent with the literary status Disraeli achieved as both a statesman and an author. These editions were well-received by his contemporaries for their wit and insider perspective on British governance, and they remain significant artifacts for understanding the interplay between Victorian politics and popular literature.
