The Novels of Charles Lever: Charles O'Malley

Charles O'Malley, the Irish Dragoon was originally published in serial format between 1840 and 1841. Written by Charles Lever, a physician who turned to literature, the novel was inspired by his experiences in Ireland and the military culture of the early nineteenth century. It belongs to a tradition of boisterous, picaresque adventure writing that emphasized camaraderie, wit, and the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars.

The illustrations for the original serial and early editions were famously provided by Phiz, the pseudonym of Hablot Knight Browne. Browne’s dynamic, caricatured style was instrumental in establishing the visual identity of Lever’s work, matching the frantic energy of the prose.
