The Poetical Works of John Milton: Edited, with Memoir, Introductions, Notes, and an Essay on Milton's English and Versification

This edition of John Milton's collected poetry was published in the late 19th century as part of an effort to make classical English literature more accessible to a scholarly and general reading public. By including extensive editorial commentary, memoirs, and technical essays on versification, publishers sought to provide a comprehensive companion for the serious student of the Victorian era who viewed Milton as a foundational pillar of the literary canon.

The editorial rigor applied to these volumes reflects the period's obsession with textual integrity and historical context. The design emphasizes clarity and gravitas, often utilizing traditional typography and sturdy bindings intended for private libraries. While the specific illustrator or designer for this particular series remains an amalgamation of the house styles common to academic publishers of that time, the work was generally well-received for its pedagogical value, helping to solidify the standard academic interpretation of Milton's influence on the English language.
