The Poetical Works of John Milton: Edited, with Memoir, Introductions, Notes, and an Essay on Milton's English and Versification

This edition of John Milton's poetical works, edited by David Masson and published in the late 19th century, emerged during a period of intense Victorian scholarly reassessment of Milton's legacy. Masson, a distinguished professor of rhetoric and English literature, dedicated decades of his career to the study of Milton, viewing his life and work as a central pillar of English literary history. The inclusion of an essay on versification reflects the era's rigorous academic focus on the mechanics of blank verse, aiming to provide a definitive, accessible resource for students and scholars alike.

The physical production of this volume follows the conventions of the Macmillan and Co. scholarly series, known for their utilitarian yet dignified aesthetic. Designed to be a comprehensive reference, the work was intended to bridge the gap between popular consumption and critical academic rigor. While the binding and typography were standard for the period, the scholarship within was received as a monumental effort to consolidate Milton's complex, multifaceted body of work into a single authoritative collection that would remain a staple in libraries for generations.
