The Poetical Works of John Milton. In Six Volumes. With the Principal Notes of Various Commentators. To which are Added Illustrations, with Some Account of the Life of Milton. By the Rev. Henry John Todd, M. A: Volume the third. Containing the last six books of Paradise Lost. Plans of Paradise lost as a Tragedy

Published in the early 19th century, this edition represents one of the most significant scholarly efforts to canonize the works of John Milton. Edited by the Reverend Henry John Todd, the set was designed to consolidate the scattered insights of previous commentators, providing a definitive reference for scholars and literary enthusiasts of the Regency era. By curating extensive footnotes alongside the text, Todd sought to situate Milton’s epic poetry within a framework of classical and contemporary interpretation.

The physical design and production of this series reflect the high standards of early 19th-century British printing. Todd’s inclusion of a biographical account and structural analyses—such as his notes on Paradise Lost as a tragedy—aimed to elevate Milton’s status as a foundational pillar of English literature. The work was well-received by the academic community of the time, serving as a reliable standard for mid-century libraries and cementing the editorial influence of Todd in the field of Miltonic studies.
