Where it came from
The Pu Clan, created by Oohashi Tsuyoshi, emerged as a unique entry in the landscape of alternative manga. The series is defined by its surreal, minimalist aesthetic and offbeat humor, which often defies the conventions of mainstream serialized storytelling. Oohashi utilized a distinctively sparse drawing style that prioritizes atmospheric tension and deadpan comedic timing, reflecting a broader movement in Japanese indie manga that values idiosyncratic artistic vision over traditional polished production.
The work was conceived during a period when Oohashi was establishing his reputation for exploring existential themes through mundane or bizarre scenarios. The series garnered a cult following among readers who appreciate experimental narrative structures and psychological character studies. Critical reception has generally highlighted the work's ability to create a deeply unsettling yet strangely endearing tone, marking Oohashi as a significant voice within the contemporary underground manga scene.
