The Select Works of the Late Revd. Mr. Matthew Henry. Being a Complete Collection of All His Practical Pieces. Together With a Short Account of His Life. And a Sermon Preached on the Occasion of His Death; Both by the Rev. Mr. William Tong

This volume represents a posthumous compilation of the practical writings of Matthew Henry, the nonconformist minister best remembered for his expansive biblical commentary. Published in the early eighteenth century, shortly after his death in 1714, the collection was assembled to preserve the theological influence of a man whose preaching and devotional texts had resonated deeply within British religious circles. It serves as a bridge between his lifetime of parish work and the lasting legacy his writing maintained for generations of Protestant readers.

The inclusion of a biography and funeral sermon by William Tong, a close friend and colleague, frames the work as both a theological resource and a commemorative tribute. The design and structure of such editions typically reflected the modest, earnest aesthetic of contemporary dissenting literature, prioritizing textual density and readability for study over ornate ornamentation. Its subsequent preservation and modern reprinting reflect the enduring historical interest in Henry’s approach to practical piety and moral instruction.
