The Settlement Cook Book: Containing Many Recipes Used in Settlement Cooking Classes, the Milwaukee Public School Cooking Centers and Gathered...

The Settlement Cook Book was first compiled by Lizzie Black Kander in 1901 to support the settlement house movement in Milwaukee. Originally titled The Way to a Man's Heart, it was designed as a practical manual to help immigrant women assimilate into American culinary habits while utilizing local, seasonal ingredients. The recipes were gathered from the cooking classes at The Settlement, a social services agency, and the Milwaukee Public School cooking centers, serving as both a instructional tool and a fundraiser for the organization's charitable efforts.

Lizzie Black Kander, a civic leader and social reformer, oversaw the manual’s expansion through numerous editions over the next several decades. Her objective was to provide economical, nutritious guidance for home management, reflecting the era's focus on domestic science and hygiene. The book achieved immense popularity for its reliability and breadth, eventually becoming a staple in midwestern kitchens and earning a reputation as a definitive guide for American home cooking in the early twentieth century.
