The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen, created by the South Korean manhwa artist known as Wann, emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period marked by a significant resurgence in the Korean comics industry. Drawing inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, Wann reinterpreted the narrative through a distinct gothic, melancholic aesthetic that became characteristic of her work in titles like Horoscope. The series reflects the thematic preoccupations of that era’s manhwa, emphasizing fluid, expressive character designs and intricate, often somber panel layouts that deviate from traditional Western comic pacing.

Wann’s design choices for the series are deeply rooted in the manhwa style of the time, which prioritized atmospheric storytelling over high-octane action. By utilizing delicate, ethereal linework and heavy ornamentation, she sought to evoke the icy, isolated setting of the source material while focusing on the emotional complexity of the lead characters. Upon its release, the work was generally well-received by fans of the shoujo-adjacent demographic for its moody visual language and its departure from the more rigid illustrative norms of the decade, cementing Wann’s reputation as a key figure in the genre.
