The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson by One of the Firm

The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson was written by Anthony Trollope in 1861 and originally serialized in The Cornhill Magazine. It was conceived as a satirical look at the commercial world of Victorian London, specifically focusing on the travails of a fledgling drapery business. Trollope intended for the work to be a humorous departure from his more serious chronicles, drawing upon his personal observations of trade and retail practices of the era.

The narrative follows the bungling attempts of three partners to manage their shop through aggressive advertising and questionable financial schemes. Upon its initial serialization, the work was poorly received by the public and critics alike, who found the tone jarring and the plot lacking the nuance of Trollope’s major series. Consequently, Trollope himself eventually expressed regret over the novel, leading to its status as a curiosity within his vast bibliography rather than a cornerstone of his literary legacy.
