The Struggles of Brown, Jones, and Robinson, by Anthony Trollope: A Novel (Illustrated Edition)

Originally serialized in the Cornhill Magazine between 1861 and 1862, this novel represents an unconventional turn in Anthony Trollope’s literary career. Following his success with the Barsetshire novels, Trollope attempted a satirical departure focusing on the commercial world of London haberdashery. The narrative follows the disastrous business ventures of three partners, serving as a biting commentary on the shifting moral landscape of mid-Victorian retail and the emerging culture of aggressive advertising.

The illustrations for the original serial were provided by George Housman Thomas, whose work aimed to capture the comedic and often frantic nature of the protagonists' exploits. Despite Trollope’s personal belief in the quality of the work, the novel was poorly received by critics and the public at the time of its release, leading it to become one of his least-discussed titles. The edition in question is a modern reprint that preserves the spirit of the original text, allowing contemporary readers to examine this outlier in Trollope's otherwise celebrated body of work.
