Where it came from
The Three-Eyed One, known in Japan as Mitsume ga Tooru, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine between 1974 and 1978. Created by the legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka, the series follows the adventures of Hosuke Sharaku, a seemingly naive student who hides a third eye on his forehead. When the eye is uncovered, it reveals a ruthless, telekinetic ancient prince of the Three-Eyed Clan, exploring themes of hidden power, ancient civilizations, and the dichotomy between innocence and intellect.
Tezuka drew inspiration for the protagonist's design from the visual language of his mature period, balancing lighthearted gag manga elements with darker, supernatural folklore. The series remains a seminal work in Tezuka's vast bibliography, praised for its imaginative world-building and the complex transformation of its lead character. Its success led to various adaptations, including a 1990 television anime and a well-regarded platforming video game, cementing its place as a classic of the shonen genre.
