Where it came from
The University of Virginia Magazine serves as the primary literary outlet for the student body of the University of Virginia, with its origins tracing back to the nineteenth century. Established to provide a platform for student discourse, poetry, and creative prose, the publication has evolved through generations of academic life to reflect the shifting intellectual trends and cultural attitudes of the university community.
The design and editorial direction of the magazine have historically been helmed by rotating boards of student editors, often overseen by faculty advisors. These volumes are characterized by an aesthetic that balances collegiate tradition with the avant-garde sensibilities of the era in which they were printed, aiming to document the scholarly and artistic output of Virginia's student population while serving as a historical record of the institution's creative growth.
