Where it came from
The Vault of Horror: A Collection of Nightmares by Oh Chang-ho emerged from the South Korean manhwa tradition, reflecting the genre's shift toward darker, horror-focused narratives for younger adult audiences. Created during a period when the Korean graphic novel industry was experimenting with diverse genre fiction, the collection was designed to explore psychological tension and supernatural dread through a distinctively stylized visual approach.
The work is noted for its stark, high-contrast imagery, which Oh Chang-ho utilized to maximize the eerie atmosphere typical of classic horror anthologies. Upon its release, the volume was received as a noteworthy contribution to the regional horror manhwa movement, valued by readers for its ability to condense complex, unsettling themes into digestible, visually striking sequences that prioritize dread over traditional action.
