The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography; Volume 11

The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, first published in 1893, was established by the Virginia Historical Society to serve as a scholarly repository for the Commonwealth’s documentary history. Volume 11, originally released in 1904, represents a significant period in the journal's early development, capturing an era when the Society was heavily focused on preserving colonial records and genealogical data following the challenges of the post-Civil War period.

The editorial vision for the early volumes was to provide rigorous, peer-reviewed access to primary sources, including letters, land grants, and public records that were at risk of deterioration. The design and layout of the journal were austere and utilitarian, reflecting the scholarly standards of academic societies at the turn of the century, and the publication remains a cornerstone of institutional history for researchers documenting the socio-political evolution of early Virginia.
