The Works of Alexandre Dumas: The forty-five guardsmen. The conspirators. The regent's daughter

This volume is part of the nineteenth-century literary tradition of collected editions, which sought to bring the prolific works of Alexandre Dumas to a broader, more accessible reading audience. These particular narratives, centered on French historical intrigue and the political machinations of the Valois and Orleans eras, were staples of the serialized novel format that made Dumas a household name across Europe and eventually in North America.

The publication of such collected works often followed the Victorian and Edwardian era trend of uniform library sets, designed to provide a cohesive aesthetic for the home bookshelves of the intellectual middle class. While the illustrations and bindings varied by publisher, the goal remained to immortalize Dumas's high-adventure prose in a durable format that signaled a refined personal library, emphasizing the enduring legacy of the author's historical dramatizations.
