The Works of Charles Lamb,: The works of Charles and Mary Lamb: Tales for children. Poetry for children. Poems. Dramatic works

This volume is part of the definitive seven-volume edition of The Works of Charles and Mary Lamb, edited by E.V. Lucas and published by Methuen & Co. in the early 20th century. Lucas, a dedicated biographer and admirer of the Lambs, aimed to produce the most comprehensive and scholarly collection of their combined literary efforts. This specific volume serves as a repository for their collaborative and individual efforts in children's literature, poetry, and drama, reflecting the siblings' unique place in the English Romantic period.

The editorial intent behind this collection was to provide a balanced view of both Charles and his sister Mary, acknowledging Mary's significant, though often overshadowed, contribution to their literary output. By organizing the texts to highlight their collaborative nature, Lucas sought to solidify their legacy as figures who navigated the intersection of adult literary culture and the nascent market for children's literature. Upon its release, the collection was praised for its meticulous annotations and the inclusion of previously obscure pieces, becoming a standard reference for scholars of the era.
