Where it came from
The Theologische Quartalschrift was established in 1819 by the Catholic faculty of the University of Tübingen, emerging as a foundational publication for the Catholic Tübingen School of theology. It was conceived as a rigorous academic response to the shifting intellectual currents of the 19th century, designed to foster a dialogue between traditional Roman Catholic dogma and modern historical-critical methodologies. The journal sought to provide a scholarly platform for clergy and academics to engage with philosophical trends, contributing significantly to the development of modern German theology.
The publication was shaped by the influence of scholars such as Johann Sebastian Drey and Johann Adam Möhler, who aimed to reconcile faith with the demands of scientific investigation. Its editorial direction favored a systematic approach to theological reflection, which garnered deep respect within European academic circles for its depth and impartiality. Over the decades, the journal maintained a consistent reputation for intellectual integrity, serving as a vital record of the evolution of Catholic thought through the transitions of German history.
