Where it came from
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun Gaiden: Astral Buddy is a spin-off manga series set within the expansive A Certain Magical Index universe. Created by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Yasuhito Nogi, the series began serialization in Dengeki Daioh in 2017. It was designed to flesh out the backstories and interpersonal dynamics of characters within the Tokiwadai Middle School, specifically focusing on Junko Hokaze and Misaki Shokuhou, providing a deeper look at the internal politics of the school's high-level espers.
The series is noted for its ability to balance intense esper combat with the distinct character-driven drama typical of the Railgun franchise. Yasuhito Nogi's artistic style complements the established aesthetic of the main Railgun series while introducing a sharper, more focused visual identity for the Astral Buddy narrative. It was generally well-received by fans for successfully expanding the lore of Academy City without relying solely on the primary protagonists of the main series.
