Where it came from
Tower of the Future, known in Japan as Mirai no Uekura, is a manga series authored by Saki Hiwatari. It was serialized in the magazine Bessatsu Hana to Yume during the early 1990s, following the immense success of Hiwatari's previous work, Please Save My Earth. The series explores themes of reincarnation, destiny, and the intersection of past lives with future technology, reflecting the author's recurring interest in psychological depth and metaphysical narrative structures.
The design and artistic direction are characteristic of Hiwatari's signature shojo aesthetic, featuring intricate line work and character designs that emphasize internal emotional states. While it is often discussed in the shadow of her more famous works, the series is recognized by critics for its ambitious world-building and the complexity of its plot, which requires readers to piece together non-linear memories and recurring character archetypes throughout the narrative.
