Traite de la Vigne Et de Ses Produits Comprenant

Published during the late 19th century, Traité de la Vigne et de ses Produits Comprenant represents the rigorous French tradition of viticultural encyclopedias. Authored by Ludovic Portes, this comprehensive work emerged at a time when the French wine industry was grappling with the devastating impacts of the phylloxera epidemic, necessitating a shift toward more scientific and systematic approaches to vine cultivation and enology.

The volume was designed to serve as a definitive manual for both professional growers and agricultural researchers. Portes utilized a methodical structure to detail the life cycle of the vine, the chemical composition of its products, and the specific viticultural practices required for different regional climates. The work was well-regarded in contemporary agricultural circles for its technical depth and remains a significant historical resource for understanding the transition to modern industrial winemaking practices in the late nineteenth-century Mediterranean and European contexts.
