Uchouten Kazoku

Uchouten Kazoku, known in English as The Eccentric Family, began as a novel written by Tomihiko Morimi and published in 2007. Set in the lush, atmospheric backdrop of modern Kyoto, the story centers on the Shimogamo family of tanuki, shapeshifting creatures who live hidden among humans. Morimi is celebrated for his whimsical and surreal prose, and this work is widely regarded as a quintessentially Kyoto-centric narrative that blends folklore, family dynamics, and magical realism.

The literary success of the novel led to a critically acclaimed anime adaptation by P.A. Works, with character designs originally conceived by Koji Kumeta. The aesthetic choice to emphasize vibrant, traditional Japanese textures alongside the fantastical elements of the tanuki society helped define the series' visual identity. Upon release, the work was praised for its balance of lighthearted comedy and poignant reflections on grief and legacy, solidifying its place as a standout piece of contemporary Japanese literature.
