Where it came from
Uchuu Shounen Bulge, also known as Barrage, was originally conceived by Kohei Horikoshi as a two-chapter one-shot published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2011. The work emerged during a formative period for the artist, serving as a creative precursor to his later massive success with My Hero Academia. The series was eventually serialized in 2012, aiming to deliver a concise, high-energy space adventure centered on themes of legacy and responsibility.
The narrative follows a boy who assumes the identity of a prince to protect a celestial realm, reflecting Horikoshi’s penchant for blend-genre storytelling that combines science fiction elements with classic shonen tropes. While the series was designed with a focus on distinct character designs and dynamic action sequences, it was received with mixed results, leading to a relatively short serialization compared to the author's later long-running works.
