Where it came from
Under the Rose is a gothic drama manga series written and illustrated by Akari Funato, originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Comic Birz starting in the early 2000s. Set in late 19th-century England, the narrative centers on the complex and often troubled lives of the aristocratic Laurant family, exploring themes of inheritance, repressed family secrets, and the rigidity of the Victorian class structure.
Funato is noted for her meticulous attention to historical detail, utilizing a delicate, flowing artistic style that mirrors the somber and refined atmosphere of the period. The series was well-received for its departure from standard shojo tropes, opting instead for a character-driven psychological study that prioritizes intricate interpersonal tension over traditional romance, securing a dedicated following among readers of atmospheric, character-focused manga.
