Where it came from
Underwater is a standalone manga volume by the creator Kotoyama, who is widely recognized for her later successes with Dagashi Kashi and Call of the Night. Published in the mid-2010s, this collection serves as a window into the author's early illustrative style and narrative interests. The work captures a distinct atmosphere, reflecting the minimalist yet evocative storytelling that would eventually become a hallmark of her more widely known serialized projects.
The volume features a collection of short stories that explore themes of introspection and transient human connection, often set against the backdrop of quiet, mundane environments. Kotoyama’s design choice relies heavily on clean line work and high-contrast shading to emphasize the emotional isolation of her characters. While it predates her mainstream commercial breakthroughs, the volume is frequently cited by fans of the artist for its raw, experimental approach to manga pacing and character development.
