Where it came from
Urameshiya, illustrated by the artist known as Makiko, emerged from the mid-1990s Japanese manga scene as a distinctive work within the horror-comedy genre. The title translates roughly to a play on the phrase 'urameshi-ya,' traditionally used by yurei or vengeful spirits to express resentment, setting a tone that balances supernatural tropes with idiosyncratic character designs.
The series is noted for its expressive, slightly unsettling art style that defines the aesthetic of the period's indie-leaning manga collections. It was crafted during a time when mangaka were increasingly experimenting with subversive takes on traditional folklore, and while it remains a cult item, it is appreciated by collectors for the specific way the artwork captures the transition between dark themes and lighthearted storytelling.
