Urasekai Picnic

Urasekai Picnic, or Otherside Picnic, originated as a light novel series penned by Iori Miyazawa and illustrated by shirakaba. First published in 2017, the work is rooted in the tradition of Japanese urban legends and internet creepypasta culture, most notably the 'Kunekune' legend. Miyazawa crafted a narrative that blends atmospheric horror with science fiction, centering on the exploration of a dangerous parallel dimension known as the 'Otherside' where these lethal manifestations dwell.

The series explores themes of trauma, isolation, and the complex psychological bond between its two protagonists, Sorawo and Toriko. Shirakaba’s character designs and environmental illustrations were widely praised for balancing the stark, unsettling nature of the Otherside with the grounded reality of the protagonists' daily lives. The work has been recognized for its successful integration of modern digital-era folklore with the conventions of the light novel medium, leading to both a manga adaptation and an anime series.
