Utrecht vorheen en thans: Tijdschrift voor geschiedenis, oudheden en statistiek van Utrecht

Utrecht vorheen en thans was published between 1834 and 1840 by the Dutch historian and archivist Nicolaas van der Monde. Conceived during a period of rising local historical interest in the Netherlands, the serial was intended to provide a comprehensive record of the city’s medieval roots, architectural evolution, and statistical developments. Van der Monde sought to compile primary source documents and narratives that were otherwise scattered, aiming to preserve the cultural identity of Utrecht as it underwent the early stages of industrial modernization.

The publication is characterized by its dedication to antiquarian detail, reflecting the 19th-century fascination with civic heritage and topography. It serves as a significant primary source for modern historians, though it was written primarily for a contemporary audience of local scholars and enthusiasts who valued the meticulous documentation of Utrecht’s changing landscape. While the journal was a niche scholarly pursuit during its time, it remains a foundational text for those studying the archival records of the city, noted for its descriptive depth and the preservation of ephemeral historical data.
