Vagabond, Vol. 19

Vagabond, Volume 19, was released as part of Takehiko Inoue’s long-running seinen manga series, which reimagines the life of the historical Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Based loosely on Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel Musashi, the series began serialization in 1998 in Morning magazine. By the time volume 19 was published, the series had established itself as a landmark in the medium for its blend of intense psychological exploration and cinematic, ink-wash influenced action sequences.

Inoue’s design philosophy for Vagabond marked a significant departure from his previous work on the sports manga Slam Dunk. He utilized traditional brush techniques to achieve a level of realism and emotional depth that was rarely seen in serialized manga at the time.
