Vagabond, Vol. 20

Vagabond, Volume 20 is part of the long-running seinen manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. Based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, the series serves as a fictionalized retelling of the life of the renowned Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Inoue began serialization in 1998, aiming to explore philosophical themes of self-discovery, enlightenment, and the nature of violence through the lens of historical martial arts.

The visual style of this volume reflects Inoue’s transition toward a more expressive, brush-heavy aesthetic that departed from his earlier, tighter work in Slam Dunk. This volume continues the series' exploration of Musashi's maturation as a warrior and human being, receiving significant acclaim for its cinematic paneling and atmospheric depth. As with the rest of the series, this volume is published in North America by Viz Media, which translated the work to bring Inoue’s ink-wash style and meditative narrative to a global audience.
