Van Von Hunter began as a webcomic created by Ron Kaulfersch, debuting in the mid-2000s as a satirical take on the fantasy and shonen manga genres. The series was designed to parody common tropes of the medium, following a muscular, melodramatic barbarian who struggles to fit into the archetypes of traditional fantasy storytelling. Its irreverent humor and self-aware writing style quickly gained a dedicated cult following during the burgeoning era of webcomics.

The transition to print was facilitated by TOKYOPOP, which published the series as an original English-language manga.
