Where it came from
This auction catalog, dated April 1887, documents the dispersal of a private library in the Netherlands. During the 19th century, such printed catalogs were essential tools for bibliophiles and book dealers, providing detailed listings of titles, editions, and bindings to attract prospective buyers to public auctions. They serve today as vital records of the provenance and circulation of rare books within the Dutch literary landscape of the late Victorian era.
The catalog was produced under the oversight of local auctioneers tasked with liquidating the collection of A. L. Brandt and others. Designed for practical utility, the document reflects the standard typographic conventions of the period, emphasizing clarity in item categorization to facilitate efficient bidding. While these documents were ephemeral by design, they are preserved by national libraries as primary source material for researchers studying the history of book collecting and the Dutch antiquarian trade.
