Where it came from
Version was authored and illustrated by the esteemed manga artist Sakaguchi Hisashi, known for his distinctively fluid linework and minimalist approach to storytelling. Serialized in the mid-1980s, the work emerged during a period of creative experimentation within the seinen manga scene, reflecting Sakaguchi's interest in blending sci-fi motifs with philosophical inquiry. The series is celebrated for its atmospheric, contemplative tone, which intentionally diverges from the high-octane pacing that dominated much of the era's popular media.
The design of Version reflects a deliberate restraint, focusing on spatial composition and character subtlety rather than intricate, cluttered backgrounds. Sakaguchi's aesthetic choices were driven by a desire to convey complex emotional states through body language and sparse dialogue. While it never achieved the mass-market ubiquity of larger blockbuster titles, it has been widely lauded by critics and fellow illustrators for its technical sophistication and remains a respected example of auteur-driven manga.
