Where it came from
Versailles of the Dead is a historical fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kumiko Suekane, serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Flowers magazine starting in 2017. The narrative reimagines the French Revolution through the lens of a zombie outbreak, centering on Marie-Antoinette's twin brother, Albert, who assumes his sister's identity to survive the palace intrigue and the undead uprising. The work is noted for its blending of meticulous period costume detail with the visceral, high-stakes conventions of the horror genre.
Suekane, previously known for her work on Afterschool Charisma, sought to subvert traditional shojo tropes by placing a masculine protagonist within the confined, aristocratic opulence of the 18th-century French court. Her design approach emphasizes the juxtaposition between the ornate, refined aesthetics of the Versailles setting and the chaotic, decaying nature of the supernatural threat. The series has been received as a creative departure for the author, appreciated by readers for its dark atmosphere and its revisionist take on a well-trodden historical epoch.
