Where it came from
Visual Prison originated as an original anime project produced by A-1 Pictures, which aired in 2021. The narrative centers on a group of vampires who engage in musical performances known as Visual Prison during the crimson moon. The series serves as an homage to the visual kei subculture of Japan, characterized by elaborate, androgynous fashion, dramatic stage personas, and a fusion of rock and gothic aesthetic influences.
The creative direction of the series was heavily influenced by the work of Noriyasu Agematsu and the music production team Elements Garden, who sought to translate the high-energy, theatrical spirit of visual kei into a narrative format. The character designs, credited to the collective Afredes, focus on maximizing the distinct, gothic-fantasy aesthetic inherent to the genre. Upon release, the series was noted for its specific dedication to the aesthetics of the 1990s and 2000s Japanese rock scene, finding a dedicated niche among fans of musical anime and stylized character-driven dramas.
